In most years the holidays near The Dominion build slowly through late November. This year almost every big opening falls inside about 24 hours. On Friday, November 20, Signia by Hilton La Cantera Resort & Spa lights its tree. On Saturday, November 21, The Rock at La Cantera holds its opening-night tree lighting, and Six Flags Fiesta Texas starts Holiday in the Park the same day. All three are on La Cantera Parkway or I-10 West, a short drive from the Dominion gates.
Most of the season's free programming comes after Thanksgiving, and much of it lands in the last two weeks of December. The hours of the skating rink at The Rock do more to decide which nights are worth planning than any of the opening-weekend lightings.
Two Nights, Three Openings
Here is the opening weekend, venue by venue.
| Date | Event | Location | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fri, Nov. 20, 5:30 p.m. | Annual Tree Lighting Illumination | Signia by Hilton La Cantera Resort & Spa, 16641 La Cantera Pkwy. | $15 adults, $5 kids |
| Sat, Nov. 21, 7 to 10 p.m. | Opening Night Tree Lighting, presented by Frost, with dueling pianos | Frost Plaza, The Rock at La Cantera | Free admission and parking |
| Sat, Nov. 21 | Holiday in the Park begins | Six Flags Fiesta Texas, 17000 IH-10 West | Included with park admission |
Each one offers something different. The Signia lighting sells its own ticket for the event. Visit San Antonio's listing describes it as a long-running resort tradition, with music, special appearances and family-friendly surprises. The Rock's lighting the next night is free and comes with outdoor skating, kids' craft corners and holiday treats. Holiday in the Park, which includes its own tree-lighting ceremony, bundles its lights, live shows and most rides into regular park admission. Food, drink, merchandise and some holiday experiences, Santa photo packages among them, cost extra.
This is only the second year of Holidays at The Rock, according to the San Antonio Spurs' September announcement. That makes it the newest of the three traditions, and it's the one that keeps scheduling events well after opening night.
The Rink Sets the Season's Rhythm
Frost Plaza at The Rock is open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day from November 21 through January 3. The expanded outdoor Glice skating rink keeps a much narrower schedule, and that schedule decides which nights are worth the drive.
- Opening weekend: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Thanksgiving week: daily, 4 to 10 p.m., closed Thanksgiving Day
- December 1 to 18: Thursday through Sunday only, 4 to 10 p.m.
- December 19 to January 3: daily, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., closing at 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed New Year's Eve
The rink drops to four nights a week for most of December's first three weeks. It doesn't open daily again until the week before Christmas. Skating requires a paid ticket and a signed waiver, and tickets are non-refundable. The Rock says walk-up spots are rarely available because they depend on rental skate sizes, so booking online is the only reliable way in. Children 12 and under need an adult on site, and children 7 and under need an adult on the ice with them.
For a family planning a skate, that leaves two good windows. The first is a Thursday or Sunday between December 1 and 18. The second is the daily stretch after December 19. Opening weekend has the longest rink hours of the season, but it also shares its Saturday with two other openings.
What Comes After Thanksgiving
Once the rink schedule is clear, the rest of The Rock's calendar falls into place around it. Almost everything on it is free with free parking.
- Wrap & Rock Holiday Market, November 27 to 29. More than 75 local makers and young entrepreneurs set up in Frost Plaza. The market runs 6 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, with entertainment including a Caribbean Christmas concert and Spurs games on the big screen. It's the closest the season gets to a gift-shopping errand you can do without driving to a mall.
- rockFit: Sleigh & Sweat, December 12. A free morning of back-to-back fitness sessions led by professional instructors, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Jingle Bell Bark, December 13. From 3 to 6 p.m., dogs come along for ugly sweater and best trick contests, local pet vendors and live acoustic music. Bring an unopened bag of pet food or a new pet supply from the wish list and you get free professional holiday photos and pet caricatures. The event benefits San Antonio Pets Alive, which also brings adoptable pets.
- Holiday Flix, December 18 to January 2. Free outdoor screenings on select nights, including Christmas Vacation on December 19, Elf on December 20, The Santa Clause on December 22 and a Frozen double feature on December 26. Free tickets are reserved online.
- Rock the Clock, December 31. A New Year's Eve party with Rhythm & Beats starting at 8 p.m. The rink is closed that night.
Look at where these fall. The movie series starts the day before the rink goes to daily hours and runs through nearly the same stretch. From December 19 on, a single evening at The Rock can include an afternoon skate, dueling pianos that Saturday, and a film after dark. The busiest stretch at The Rock is the last two weeks of December, when school is out and visiting family is in town.
Holiday in the Park Runs on Its Own Calendar
Six Flags Fiesta Texas lists Holiday in the Park for "Select Dates, November 21 – January 4, 2027." The park will not be open every day in that span. The official event page names the main programming as A Christmas Carol, Sing Christmas, a tree-lighting ceremony and the light displays, along with Santa and seasonal food.
As of late October, the park's hours page didn't yet show November or December operating days. Check the Six Flags Fiesta Texas park hours before you promise anyone a specific night. The park also has a separate New Year's 360 Fireworks Celebration on December 31, 2026, the same night as Rock the Clock. That gives Dominion households two New Year's Eve options a few minutes apart.
Getting There While 1604 Is Still Under Construction
Every venue on this list sits close to the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange, which is still under construction. TxDOT's Loop 1604 North Expansion overview describes a $1.4 billion, 23-mile project in six segments. Segments one through four are under construction. Segment 2 is the $463 million piece at I-10, and TxDOT's segment page estimates it will be finished in 2028. TxDOT's traffic-impacts feed also lists an ongoing eastbound construction zone at Loop 1604 and La Cantera, with daytime and overnight work windows.
The construction also affects the trail. The city's park closures list, updated October 16, says the Leon Creek Greenway section north of the Valero Trailhead to The Rim is closed for TxDOT work until about mid-2027. A separate section under I-10 near the Marquis Trailhead is closed until further notice. That rules out a trail walk or bike ride to The Rim's holiday shopping this year.
If you want dinner before the lights, there's a new option on the same road. Sixty Vines announced an August 10 opening at 15900 La Cantera Parkway, with 60 wines on tap, a wine-country menu and weekend brunch, according to Restaurant News. Its San Antonio location page now lists hours and takes reservations. Since The Rock is free and the rink closes at 10 p.m., an early dinner nearby followed by a later skate is easy to fit into one evening.
A Paced Season, Week by Week
Put the calendars side by side and the season looks like this:
| Window | What's on near The Dominion | What to plan around |

| Nov. 20 to 21 | Signia lighting, The Rock lighting, Holiday in the Park opens | Three openings in about 24 hours |
| Nov. 27 to 29 | Wrap & Rock Holiday Market | Free, evening hours Friday and Saturday |

| Dec. 19 to Jan. 3 | Rink open daily except Dec. 31, Holiday Flix, dueling pianos Dec. 19 | Busiest stretch at The Rock |
| Dec. 31 | Rock the Clock, Six Flags fireworks | Rink closed |
Event times can change, and The Rock says its schedule is subject to change, so check each venue's page the week you go.
